1. Background:
Kilimo Trust is a not-for-profit organization working on agriculture for development across the East Africa community – in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi. Kilimo Trust is a go-to implementing part-ner for inclusive and sustainable market-led agricultural value chain development in the region. Our Mission is to make agribusiness a transformative tool for wealth creation, food and nutrition security for smallholder farmers and other value chain actors. KT implements agribusiness projects on behalf of and/or in partner-ship with Development partners, Government agencies, and Private sector companies.
Kilimo Trust is implementing the Africa Sustainable Rice Bond (ASRB) Technical Assistance Programme for Flamingoo Foods in Katavi, with funding support from the Smallholder Sustainability Upscaling Programme (SSNUP) through Helvetas Tanzania. This one-year programme (2026-2027) aims to strengthen Flamingoo Foods’ production systems and institutional capacity while enhancing the resilience and productivity of smallholder rice farmers within its value chain. Working with smallholder farmers, the initiative will support the adoption of climate smart and sustainable rice production practices through farmer training, demon-stration plots, structured advisory services, and improved monitoring systems to track yields and incomes, ultimately contributing to increased productivity, climate resilience, and sustainable growth in Tanzania’s rice sector.
Kilimo Trust Tanzania invites applications for the position of Field-Based Associate (FBA) to be based in Mpanda, Katavi.
2. Objective of the Assignment:
The objective of this assignment is to improve productivity and post-harvest handling through SRP-aligned approaches, and climate-smart agriculture, including regenerative practices with the focus on:
a) Water management improvements, including introduction of efficient irrigation practices (e.g., polytube systems, water control techniques such as Alternate Wetting and Drying where applica-ble).
b) Improved transplanting techniques (ratooning) and planting density.
c) Soil fertility and integrated nutrient management.
d) Integrated pest and disease management.
e) Promotion of climate-smart, SRP-aligned, and regenerative practices.
f) Post-harvest management.
3. Scope of Work:
The Field Based Associate will be responsible for;
a) Training the trainers (ToT)-Strengthening sustainable agronomic practices, set-up of internal training and extension system using KT approved Training curriculum and materials on agro-nomic practices, post-harvest handling, and business management.
b) Field coaching and technical backstopping ensuring alignment with SRP principles.
c) Establishing structured out-grower scheme model.
d) Establishment of demonstration plots and lead farmer network linked to Flamingoo Foods.
e) Provision of technical guidance on climate-smart rice production (water management, soil fertility, IPM, crop rotation).
f) Capacity building on utilization of Rice by-products.
4. Duration:
The assignment shall be undertaken over a period of six (6) months. A detailed timeline will be provided to the successful associate upon contract signing, outlining milestones in detail for each delivery. The successful individual shall be provided with the necessary documents and tools to enable them to execute the assignments.
5. Education, Qualifications and Experience:
a) A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related field.
b) At least three (3) years of experience in agronomy, extension services, and post-harvest management within the rice value chain.
c) Proven experience in designing and delivering training or capacity-building programs for agricultural value chains, particularly in Sustainable and Regenerative Rice Practices.
6. Skills and Abilities:
a) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
b) Ability to develop and translate plans into cost-effective operations and activities in line with available resources.
c) Good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
d) Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
e) Proficiency in computer applications, with strong record-keeping and report-writing skills.
f) Strong training needs assessment and facilitation skills.
g) Ability to work effectively with farmers, extension agents, and other stakeholders across the rice value chain.
h) Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
